MicrochippingPets get lost everyday. Some may find their way home by themselves, but many do not. Although a collar with an ID tag is a great way to help a lost pet get home, what happens if the collar falls off? How will your pet get back to you?

This is where microchipping is an important necessity. A microchip is a small device about the size of a rice grain. The microchip is encoded with a unique microchip identification number which is linked to the owner’s contact information. The microchip is injected under the pet’s skin between the shoulder blades at the base of the neck. If a lost animal is found, it can be scanned with a microchip reader. The ID retrieved from the scanner can be used to contact the owner. Animal hospitals, shelters and animal control usually keep microchip within their vicinity and will gladly use the readers to help unite a pet and owner.

If your pet is not already microchipped, please contact us at Palmdale Veterinary Hospital for pricing and to make an appointment at (661) 273-1555.
